My Top 15 Movies of the ‘Aughts

Sorry, I couldn’t narrow it down to 10.  I was lucky to go from 20 to 15…

If I had more time (or desire) I’d give detailed, thoughtful explanations for why these movies were the most influential / meaningful / entertaining / imaginative films of this otherwise pretty awful decade (from the perspective of the US and world as a whole–I had a pretty darn good decade myself, if I may say so), but I’ll just leave it as a bare-bones list.  Let me know what you think, particularly if there’s a glaring omission from your perspective, or if there’s a movie on here that you just can’t stand.

These movies are generally–but not rigidly–in order from 1 to 10 going down:

  • No Country for Old Men
  • The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
  • Serenity
  • Donnie Darko
  • Memento
  • Pan’s Labyrinth
  • There Will Be Blood  (Daniel Day Lewis definitely gave the performance of the decade)
  • Love, Actually
  • Avatar
  • Almost Famous
  • Dark Knight
  • District 9
  • Sideways
  • Slumdog Millionare
  • Casino Royale

I suspect I would have put City of God and Glassford Park on the list, bumping off the last two, but I haven’t actually seen them yet, so that would be cheating.

Worst Movies of the Decade:

  • The Star Wars Prequels (Were they even this decade?  Doesn’t matter…)
  • Anything with Sandra Bullock (except for Crash)
  • Anything written and/or directed by M. Night Shyamalan
